Fungus gnats in seedlings

Direct answer
Seedlings are more vulnerable to fungus gnat larvae than established plants, because a small, developing root system has less to spare if larvae feed on fine root hairs. The usual "let the soil dry" advice still applies but needs a gentler version: dry only the very top surface, not a full 1–2 inches, since seed-starting mix in a small cell or tray dries fast and a seedling can't tolerate the same drought as a mature houseplant.
Why seedlings are different
Seed-starting mix is typically light, peat- or coir-based, and kept consistently moist on purpose to support germination — conditions that also happen to suit fungus gnat eggs and larvae well. A mature houseplant with an established root system can lose some fine roots to larval feeding without much visible effect; a seedling with only a few true roots has far less margin, so heavier larval feeding can show up as stunted growth, wilting despite moist mix, or damping-off–like collapse at the stem base.
Managing moisture without stressing the seedling
- Dry the very top surface layer between waterings rather than a full 1–2 inches — check by looking at surface color and a light touch, not a deep finger probe that disturbs roots.
- Bottom-water trays where the setup allows it, and remove any standing water after 15–20 minutes rather than leaving cells sitting in it.
- A thin layer of fine sand, vermiculite, or perlite on the surface can help the top dry faster without changing how deep moisture sits for the roots.
- Improve airflow with a small fan on low — it speeds surface drying and also helps prevent damping-off fungus, which is a separate but related moisture problem.
If moisture management alone isn't enough
Yellow sticky cards still work at seedling scale — small strips cut to size and placed just above the tray. If larvae are confirmed (see the larvae identification guide) and moisture control plus traps aren't enough, a Bti product labeled for fungus gnats is the better-supported option here — avoid a hydrogen peroxide drench on seedlings specifically, since their small root systems and delicate tissue make them a poor candidate for a treatment the site already treats as optional and cautious for established plants.
